In W.D. Valgardson's short story "Identities", the connections from the title to the ironic and contrasting events that transpire throughout seem not to be coincidential. These connections are easily noticible, such as simply a mistaken "identity" or false-profiling, even being unshaven has it's role in the outcome of his demise. In the beginnging, all this man is wanting is a beautiful day "liquid with sunshine". A relaxing drive through his own suburbs slowly turns more and more into a drive through Brooklyn. This alone is ironic due to the classy Mercedes casually driving through a run-down, ghetto-bound neighbourhood. At this point the man remembers he needs to call his wife while he is in the middle of this strange land, as he never let her know where he was going. While looking for a payphone, he comes across some shady characters. Although he does not confront them, he still profiles them and keeps his distance. Dramatic irony is present at this moment because a police officer is advancing on the MAN, since he looks shady himself (with his five o'clock shadow). Concluding sentence! Tie it all together!
